Chia Liu és llicenciada en Sociologia per la Universitat de Massachusetts Amherst i va obtindre un màster en Demografia i anàlisi social a la Universitat de California Irvine. Ha treballat de demògrafa a l'Oficina del cens dels Estats Units d'Amèrica (United States Census Bureau) durant tres anys, dos dels quals va treballar a l'oficina central de Washington D.C. i l'any restant a Boston, reclutant i formant encuestadores pel Cens del 2010. Actualment els seus interessos científics se centren en gènere, unions i família. Addicionalment, la Chia és una apassoniada dels animals i una intrèpida viatgera.
