Resum
The doctoral thesis “The Enumeration of Same-Sex Couples in Population Censuses: Three Essays on the Statistical Visibility and Spatial Segregation of Same-Sex Couples Across Societies“ addresses a new and original problem – the statistical enumeration of same-sex couples in population censuses and other quantitative data sources and shows in the first chapter how these censuses of various countries have begun to capture this statistical enumeration by different methodologies. This chapter gives an exhaustive exploration on these different methods and analyses the advantages and disadvantages adopting an international perspective on countries in Europe, the Americas and Australia/ Oceania. Chapter two exploits census information for the study of spatial patterns using the very high geographical detail among same-sex couples along with descriptive statistics in Brazil. A multilevel-regression allows for spatial analysis of the presence of same-sex couples down to the subdistrict-level for the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Chapter three consists two parts: the first concentrates on the statistical visibility of SSCs in an entire country, Germany (divided geographically into federal states), based on the country’s annual microcensus; the second focuses on a comprehensive spatial segregation analysis of SSCs in the city-state of Berlin, based on Germany’s full census conducted in 2011. This provides a high level of geographical detail and, in contrast to the nationwide analysis, it benefits from the availability of data on civil unions as a legal institution.
